Feb 12th Silliness

WHAT A YEAR, HUH? I don't have much to say today. I'm tired. It's been a time, and sometimes growth is really fucking exhausting, y'know? So this post is dedicated to taking a break... with GIANT FUZZY MASCOTS! WHAT'S UUUUUP? They make no sense, and I love them. Also some other funny shit thrown in.

And actually one of the best puffy mascots is from right here in the USA! Western Kentucky's BIG RED!

WARNING: Mild physical humor. But the kid's alright (and the video is posted by his dad which just adds to the hilarity, IMO).

I hope you enjoyed this rabbit hole. See y'all next year. I love you.

Feb 11 11th hour post

First, can we just take a moment to marvel and laugh that Blogger still exists?

At this point, kind of a comforting touchstone of Internet 1.0 in a corrupt and dark Internet 2.0 world.

Second, HI, FEBRUARY. HI, DEAR FRIENDS.

So far, this challenging month has been surprisingly gentle on me. But it's young and we've got a ways to go.

As some of you know (probably from Instagram), I got myself a designer cat last May. I was having a hard time and feeling lost. And I needed help. And I got it. His name is Amadeo, Amadeo Babycat in full. Aya is is (c)auntie.

Amadeo brings me a lot of happiness and is an excellent pet therapist. Without further ado, Amadeo Babycat, to buoy your spirits and soothe your soul:

Hi babies,

I had a week with a surprising amount of February in it. The most surprising piece of it though, perhaps, is that part of this growing up adventure seems to involve increased resilience... which on Thursday night looked like a remembering that sometimes, all you need to do is dance.

Maybe it's because it is my sixth February in the bay (7th if you count a visit), but I've also come to love a good moment of praising the Goddess... who, it turns out, also quite likes to get down. ;).

Keep shakin' it...
xo,
aya

February 8 - Sorry I am late!

[Yes, that was meant to rhyme]

Sorry I couldn't post on the right day, everyone! I was in Venice celebrating my 30th birthday Carnivale :) :) because, as it turns out, thirty IS the new twenty! <3 <3 <3

I actually say that somewhat jokingly, as so much of my thirtieth birthday has actually been about embracing the age.i.actually.am. I have been so scared of growing up, but now that another milestone is upon me, I am finding a surprising peace in this birthday. It turns out: I definitely do NOT want to be twenty anymore! What a blessing to be happy with your portion.

Many of you and the entire internet have noted, January 2018 was a long, long, long month.

It was a long month for me, as well. I wept more tears in January than in the past six years. And the grand finale: on January 31st, my first niece was born and her first twelve days of life have been precarious and trying and sad. Fuck you, January. (Ironic to write it on the #fuckFebruary blog, lol.)

BUT, I will say this: I also felt more joy in January than I deserve, those tears were cleansing, and I believe more firmly than ever than the human spirit is resilient as all fuck. So here comes February and I am throwing on my glitter for a Venetian masquerade ball, I am booking tickets to visit the LoveOfMyLife, and I am choosing 31 things I will accomplish this year before I turn 31. Cuz life moves on, and I thank Hashem more than ever that it does.

And now, some links!

Lots of love everyone.

[Feb 9th]

Wow, here we are again! Feeling deeply grateful to continue to share this special space with you all. Huge huge thank you to Ruthie for reigniting this every year.

Life is moving at a quick pace these days (though when was it ever not?) so my apologies that this post is fairly brief.

A couple of things for your enjoyment:
-  Small collection of Nayyirah Waheed short poems (ignore the click-bait title): click here
-  Bad lip reading video for a laugh: click here

Love and hugs,
Tali

Feb. 5th - Some delicious tunes

Hey sweet friends,

I am writing from Jerusalem where I'm living for the semester. I'm feeling a little sick today, but in general life here is treating me really, really well so far and I am very grateful.

The soundtrack to my life in these recent, wonderful weeks has been the music coming out of a collaboration between Vieux Farka Toure and Idan Raichel (h/t to Micah for telling me that they have been playing together). I LOVE IT. Vieux Farka Toure is the son of Ali Farka Toure, another favorite of mine (known for Malian music with a bluesy influence). Idan Raichel is a contemporary Israeli artist.

So, here is a link to a playlist by the Toure-Raichel collaboration. It's really rich and deep and beautiful and relaxing.

And, for extra fun, here is a link to some of Ali Farka Toure's music that I also find to be super moving and have held close for many years.

With love,

Nomi

February 3

Dear friends,

Phew, that January was a long month! For the first time in years I was grateful for February, and I'm so glad to be re-embarking upon this journey together.

Since last year, I am now closer than ever to becoming a full blown midwife. My days and nights are consumed by studying my passion -- women's health care, birth, menopause, abortion, and policies of our health care industry that need to be revamped ASAP. I am inspired and exhausted and just getting started. So, as usual, I will share the thoughts that are taking up my mental energy, hopefully shedding some light and newness into your days.

First, there is this: a new speculum designed by women! Yona

Now, there's this: Ancient Aztec Midwives

And, dolphin birth.

Love,
Aleeza
